Secure cross-platform messaging is getting closer to reality as Apple expands testing of encrypted RCS chats between iPhone and Android devices in its newest developer beta release.
The newest developer preview now enables end-to-end encryption for RCS conversations between different platforms. Test users running the latest beta software can send protected messages between iPhones and Android phones, provided both devices meet the required test versions. Earlier trials only supported encrypted chats between iPhones when iMessage was turned off.
Apple’s developer notes state that encrypted RCS messaging between platforms is currently limited to testing. The company clarified that the feature will arrive in a future major system update rather than in the current beta version. This means public users will need to wait until a later release cycle before it officially launches.
To participate, iPhone users must install the newest beta build, while Android users need the latest beta version of the Google Messages app. Availability may also vary depending on mobile carrier support during this early testing stage.

When encryption is successfully active, a lock symbol appears inside the chat thread on both devices. This visual cue confirms that messages are protected during transmission and cannot be intercepted or read by outside parties.
This development addresses a security limitation that has existed since Apple first introduced RCS compatibility. While iPhone-to-iPhone chats have long supported encryption and Android-to-Android RCS messages are also protected, cross-platform texts historically lacked this safeguard.
The encryption layer was developed in cooperation with the GSM Association, marking a major step toward aligning cross-platform messaging security with existing encrypted standards.
Beta testers can activate the option through message settings, where an encryption toggle appears automatically after installing the test software. Apple’s notes emphasize that the feature will not ship in the current release but is planned for upcoming versions across its ecosystem, including phones, tablets, computers, and wearables.
